Celebrate 50 Years of The Harvard Independent

The first issue of The Harvard Independent appeared on October 9, 1969, turning a thoughtful, nonpartisan eye on the life of the Harvard community at a time of extreme political tumult. In the five decades since, the Independent has never shrunk from its mission to offer a critical alternative voice.

On October 4, 5, and 6, 2019, alumni and current students from each of the newspaper’s five decades will gather on the Harvard campus to look back on the Independent’s first half-century—and forward to the next. Come for the full weekend and enjoy a range of events focused on student journalism and the Indy’s legacy.

On this page you’ll learn what’s in store for the reunion weekend and how you can sign up to participate. In the meantime, save the dates and make your travel reservations! As more details about the reunion weekend come together, we’ll add them to this page.

A Symposium on the state of journalism

The morning after the gala, we will reconvene for a symposium on the past, present, and future of student and professional journalism. Panelists drawn from every decade of the Indy’s history will share stories from their years running the newspaper and covering campus news, sports, arts, and opinion. The Graduate Board will share an update on the Campaign for Independence. And in a forward-looking panel, we’ll talk about opportunities to revitalize today’s Indy and imagine how students’ media needs will evolve in the future. The event will be free to all Indy alumni and current students and no registration is required.
